The battle was fought in Appomattox, Virginia, and was one of the last war to be fought during the American Civil War.

During the same, it was General Lee who tried the final time to attack the opposite army by hoping to break the forces on his front, and also presuming that they would be having light artillery.

However, he was unaware that the opposition forces, under General Grant, were backed by more infantry. Hence, General Lee had to surrender along with his troops.

The condition of the surrender put forth by General Grant was that the troops could return home only after surrendering their weapons and only allowed to carry sidearms and effectively and spontaneously ending the war in Virginia.

This incident put into motion a series of surrenders, thus ultimately ending the four-year-long civil war.
