    During the Era of Reform, which is sometimes referred to as period of Freedom's ferment. There exists reform movements that caused people to want Social Reform. This era occurred between 1830 - 1860, the causes for the want of social reform from the people are the following amongst others:

    1. the Second Great Awakening,

    2. the transformation of the American economy,

    3. Industrialization, urbanization, and lingering agendas of the revolutionary period.

    4. Demands for Women's rights,

    5. Needs for prison reform,

    6. Advocacy for abolition of imprisonment for debt,

    7. Seeking an end to capital punishment,

    8. Improving the conditions of the working classes,

    9. Improvement in a system of universal education
