Why did Americans object to Spanish actions in Cuba?

There were two main reasons why Americans objected to Spanish actions in Cuba: 1) Because they believed the Spanish were being far too cruel to the Cubans and 2) Because there were reports that the Spanish were attacking American ships in the region.
