    The North stopped believing in slavery except for in the south. So slaves would run away to the North or any place that accepted them. Those who were caught were forced to be returned at a condition far worse then before.

    Explanation:

    I believe it is A. Disease was horrid and they were carried on slave ships cramped tightly together with hardly any room to move and the stench was horrid. Some were allowed on board until some jumped off rather taking drowning then slavery. And later on throughout the years, they didn't depend on slaves because they had factories and machines.
