Explanation:
The American Catholic Church has become the largest religious confession in the country that has seen its number of faithful increase to 68,500,000 people, that is, 0.57% more than the previous year. Catholicism arrived in the territories that today form the United States before the Protestant Reformation with Spanish explorers who settled in what is now Florida (1513) and the southwest. The first Christian rite that took place in the United States was a mass celebrated in St. Augustine, Florida. The influence of the Spanish missions in California (from 1769 onwards) form a part of the memory and heritage of the area.
In the British colonies Catholicism was introduced when Maryland was established in 1634. This colony offered a strange example of religious tolerance in an intolerant era, particularly among other British colonies that exhibited a militant Protestantism. However, at the time of the United States War of Independence, Catholics made up less than 1% of the population of the Thirteen Colonies.

The Catholic Church was a part of Texas history ever since Europeans set foot on the land in 1528. During the Spanish Texas period, Catholicism had not been challenged religiously. This gave Catholics complete control over Christianization efforts among the Indians. After Mexican independence in 1821 Catholics were in a minority status in the land. They remained to be one of the largest single religious bodies in Texas and continued to be one of the largest ethnic groups among Texas Catholics.
