United States and Britain began the Berlin airlift because Soviet Union blocked all road and rail travel to and from West Berlin on June 24, 1948.

    Explanation:

Actually, in response of Soviet blockade of land routes into west Berlin, a massive airlift of food, water and medicine was begun by United States to the citizens of the city Berlin. Soviet wanted to participate more in the economic matters of Germany which was denied by American and British officials. Soviet Union blocked the road and rail until May 1949.
