What period in western Europe history fell between the fall of the roman empire and the Renaissance

This period is known as the Dark Ages. The period between 486 AD and the 1400's. This was a period of general chaos in Europe and the loss of much of the civilization that had been established by the Romans. Europe emerged from the Dark Ages as a result of Muslim influence and the rebirth of knowledge in Southern Europe, especially in the Italian city-states.
