Mao's "Great Leap Forward" was really a 'Great Leap Backward', because of the economic, farming, and lifestyle setbacks, as well as large amounts of famine and pests that devoured the land. In terms of political landscape, he was able to establish a rural form of communism as an alternative to soviet Leninism.
