Most Americans were happy with their role as part of the British empire because they were a part of the strongest empire in the world. During the 1750's, Britain had the strongest military in the world and had one of the strongest economies. Being tied to this empire ensured that the colonists had financial success, constant trade partners, and military protection.

One of the areas of discontent among colonists at this time was the restrictions put on their economic freedoms. Due to the mercantilist system established by the British government, the colonists were limited to trading and buying British goods.
