Upon de Klerk becoming President of South Africahe stated that he wanted to end apartheid. In 1990 he further stated that the African National Congress was again legal and that Nelson Mandela was to be released from his imprisonment. This and the 1991 UN Peace Accord brought the first democratic election by 1994, in which Mandela became president, a fact considered he end of apartheid.
