President Carter terminated US diplomatic relations with Iran on April 7, 1980, and any official relationship was absent after that date. The State Department notes that Switzerland serves as protecting power for US interests in Iran. But secret meetings between US and Iranian officials, coordinated with official negotiations between Iran and five other countries, resulted in a deal to halt Iran's nuclear program in 2013.

In the news just recently, US President Donald Trump announced he was pulling the US out of that agreement with Iran, so US-Iran relations remain problematic.
