Diocletian was the primary Emperor to isolate the Roman Empire into a Tetrarchy. He isolated the realm, and made himself the head of the Eastern Empire, while Maximian reigned in the Western Empire. In 285 AD, Emperor Diocletian concluded that the Roman Empire was too enormous to oversee.

He separated the Empire into two sections, the Eastern Roman Empire and the Western Roman Empire. Throughout the following hundred years or something like that, Rome would be brought together, split into three sections, and split in two once more.
