True. The Whitman Massacre of 1847 involved the killings of a missionary to Oregon named Marcus Whitman, as well as a dozen others which included his wife at the hands of the Cayuse Native American tribe. Whitman traveled to the Pacific Northwest in the hopes of converting the Natives to Protestantism and introducing them to European-American style Agriculture. A measles outbreak occurred, and rumors spread that Whitman was poisoning the Cayuse. This lead to a massacre of the settlers, and the US government responded by launching the Cayuse war from 1847-1855 which lead to the loss of the Cayuse lands as well as lose much of its population from fighting.
