Indeed, the first and foremost purpose of Roman Roads was military. It allowed Roman soldiers and their supplies to move faster and further to areas of conflict. In this manner, both ancient and new Roman territories were united and consolidated since the roads allowed for rapid military intervention in the event of rebellions or invasions. It is also true that the Romans invented the first large bridges that also were the strongest (many are still functioning and standing in Europe nowadays) to overcome topographic obstacles but that still means that Roman roads were important due to their military value.
