    Explanation:

    The reason for this is because, after several battles both, had aced off once more, on April 11, 1862, without engaging each other.

    Both ships refused to fight on the other's terms. The Union side wanted the battle to take place in the open sea while The Virginia, on the other hand, tried unsuccessfully to lure the Monitor into another war in Hampton Roads harbour.

    The confederate was eventually evacuated on May 9, 1862. The Monitor, on the other hand perished along with 16 crewmen during a very strong wind off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on December 31, 1862.
