The Japanese soldiers ate fairly well compared to their European and American counterparts. Their rations included rice, fish, sometimes other types of meat, they would also get vegetables, other sea food, and similar things. It wasn't a problem for them to get food since they were always a sea nation that developed fishing as much as it could. This still persists today and they eat more fish than others.
