    When the confederates bombarded union soldiers at fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, the coastal garrison built in 1829 went onto a 34-hour exchange of artillery fire after Major Robert Anderson occupied the unfinished fort. After the battle Anderson and 86 soldiers surrendered and the confederate troops occupied the fort for nearly 4 years.
