Both were labor federations (unions) around the late 19th century seeking similar goals, such as improving working conditions, increased wages and less working hours, and both used strikes to achieve their purposes.

Albeit KOL appeared to be more radical than AFL; they were more inclusive and receptive with a wider range of members, embracing more diversity; and off course, a major disagreement between them is outlined that way: "The KOL drew upon unskilled workers, whereas the AFL was cut down to skilled workers".

The KOL accepted workers from skilled and unskilled trades, whereas the AFL only accepted skilled laborers.
