The Vietnam War had a big impact on the transformation of protest into rebellion. As there were many American causalities, there was more opposition to the war. Because the draft exempted college students, the burden of fighting fell on the working class and the poor. MLK, Jr. spoke out against the administration as violent and draining resources. There was a lot of opposition, but American involvement had come through secret decisions by political elites. There was opposition that led to counterculture, but also political corruption to keep American involvement in the war.
