What was the cause of the Crusades?

    The Catholic Church wanted to gain the holy land (Jerusalem) to themselves however it was owned by the Muslims who inhabited the land. Christians sought to steal it from them but failed tremendously numerous times. They were allowed to roam freely in the land after a truce however.
