This three thinkers, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle agreed that the State was absolute and should be completely obeyed, but differed on their ideas of what or who the State is.

Socrates held the view that the State should always be obeyed, even if it made decisions that the individual may disagree with. He believed that if you choose to live under a sovereign power, for the benefits that this bring to the individual, them the individual must also submit completely to the law of the State, for the benefit of society.

Plato also believed that the State should be completely obeyed, but in his society people would naturally assumed their roles based upon what kind of person they are, something decided by which part of their sole is most prominent; for him the soul was divided in three parts: reason, spirit, desire. He believed that knowledge of "the Forms" constituted legitimacy, and also that philosophers should govern society as philosopher kings.

Aristotle rejected Plato's totalitarian ideas and argued that Plato's vision of the State removed any sense of individuality, which is the key to human prosperity. He explained that humans are a "political" animal that need to be surrounded by other humans, with individual thoughts, in order to argue and debate. Although he did still believed that there are natural rulers and natural slaves, his idea was more individualistic and based on what people are good at.
