The scientists and professionals that worked in the Oak Ridge Facility in Tennesse were among the 129,000 workers that contributed to the Manhattan project which started in 1942. This project would lead to the creation of the first atomic bomb based on enriched uranium. The project was so secret that records state that only a handful of professionals really knew what was the objective of all of the efforts that were being made on a day to day basis in the project.

Meanwhile, in Chicago, another group of scientists was working on creating the first nuclear reactor in order to produce enriched plutonium. Which was a key component of a second atomic bomb?

The only thing scientists knew about the project was that it would bring an "end to the war" and quite possibly "an end to all wars". They only learned what they were working for all those years after the news broke out about the bombings.
