The conflict that caused the Crusades to happen were the attacks of the Arab Muslims against the Byzantine Empire in the Holy Land. Pope Urban II called for the Crusades in 1095 CE to ensure the safety of the pilgrims on their visits to the Holy Land and Jerusalem. It also supported the Byzantine Empire, which at the time, had been fighting the Arab Muslims.
