I believe you are talking about the Great Depression so I'll answer it correspondingly, however, if it's not, I apologize on my behalf.
Women were not able to do their daily chores due to the dust bowls and storms outside, and they could not farm meaning no food > starving children.
The Great Depression also caused poverty to hit many places, and it caused them to move to other places.
