    The Europeans belief they were superior to other racial, ethnic, and religious groups is the factor that motivated European imperialism in the 18th and 19th centuries.

    Different motives cause empires to look to stretch their rule over other territories or countries. These motives are comprised of exploratory, economic, ethnocentric, religious and political motives.
