    They used the National Road. The National Road was the first major improved highway in the United States to be built by the Federal Government. This road connected the Potomac and Ohio Rivers and was a pathway to the West for many settlers. It was built in 1811 and the major junctions were the east end in Cumberland, Maryland and the west end was Vandala, Illinois.
