Why are india pakistan nepal and other countries known as a subcontinent?

This land mass was not originally a part of Asia, it merged into the Eurasian plate 55 million years ago.

Which is why it is bordered by the Himalayas in the North, Hindu Kush in the West and Arakanese in the East.
