How might geography make it hard for Japan to keep control of its empire

    Well, say people on one island of Japan are fed up with the government, and have started a rebellion. An let's say Japan's Navy is on the furthest island away. As soon as re-enforcements arrive, the island will be in rebel control.

    By having separate islands, it takes longer for Japan to quell any riots, invasions, etc.
