    History of suffrage in the United States: 1789 - The United States Constitution authorized the state governments to set the voting qualifications for their own respective states. 1869 - Wyoming became the pioneer state to grant women the 'right to vote'. The move was followed by some other states. 1870 - The 'fifteenth amendment' to the constitution paved the way to grant non-white males and freed slaves the 'right to vote'. 1920 - The nineteenth amendment gave all the women across the US the 'right to vote'. 1971 - All the adults aged 18 and above irrespective of gender or race were granted the 'right to vote' after the 'twenty-sixth amendment' made to the constitution.
