    the Patriarch and the Pope

    Explanation:

Even before the split known as the Great Schism occurred, the Eastern and the Western churches had different heads in charge of them. The Eastern Church had its seat in Constantinople and its head was Patriarch Michael Cerilarius, while the Western Church had its seat in Rome and its head was Pope Leo IX. The two churches had different views on the religion, what should be used, what shouldn't, and eventually that led to their official split, which also resulted in shutting down of the Eastern Orthodox churches in the territory of Rome, and shutting down the Western Catholic churches in the territory of Byzantium.
