    Answer: (1) Pericles strengthened democracy in Athens by paying public officials.

    (2) In the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians sought to attack Sparta with its powerful navy, while Sparta sought to directly confront the Athenian forces with its superior and strong army.

    (3) I think that some Athenians found Socrates' ideas to be disturbing because his ideas questioned some of the foundational ideas that Greek and Athenian lives and beliefs were based on, things that seemed unquestionable to most people
