The early 1900s was a time of growing nativism, meaning people preferred native born people over immigrants or foreigners, and this greatly effected the immigrant policy. They began to limit the number of immigrants they allowed into America, such as Japanese and Chinese, some countries they completely shut off and refused to let any immigrants from those countries in. They also were very rude to the immigrants already in America (take Sacco and Vanzetti for example)
