There are stark differences between communism and democracy. Modern democratic countries have free and fair elections every couple of years. The power of the government eventually lies within the people of the country. Coupled with his comes other freedoms.

For fair elections to take place, there is also a need for freedom of speech and a thriving media.

Democratic countries also have a number of different branches of the government in order to ensure no single entity has too much power e. g. a free judiciary.

Communism, as a political system does not provide individual freedoms and is more concerned about the society. Free and fair elections do not take place and there is usually a one-party system. In order to maintain this one-political system, there is no tolerance for different opinions which means that there is no free press.

Also, political power mostly resides the one person who has a complete control over the affairs of the country.
