Mitch Landrieu was elected mayor of New Orleans and received this award in 2018 for his leadership in eliminating four Confederate statues in New Orleans. Confederate sympathizers tried every possible means to stop the removal of statues but Landrieu not only did the task but also offered a clear reflection on the institution of slavery and violence underpinning the monuments.
