The National Convention (in French: Convention nationale) was the main institution of the First French Republic.

1 - The convention was an elected assembly of a constituent nature that concentrated the executive powers (until its delegation in the Committee of Public Salvation) and legislative in France, from September 19, 1792 to October 30, 1795.

2 - It began with a constituent assembly that was convened in September 1792, and was formed as a result of the elections held previously.

3 - One of its first tasks was the drafting of a constitution to replace the one of 1791. This constitution, although it was not put into practice due to the external pressures of European antirevolutionary powers, is considered by many authors and historians as one of the most advanced that has existed.

4 - The new constitution Included among its advances universal suffrage, the right to education and work, and protection with public money of the most humble.

5 - The assembly suppressed the monarchy, although it left for later the official proclamation of the republic (I Republic).

Related to this fact was the trial and death sentence by simple majority of Louis XVI, alleging evidence as his complicity or connivance with the enemies of France. He also wrote a special calendar; the republican calendar, in which each month was related to some agricultural activity or meteorological event.
