William J. Bryan, (1860-1925), was a Nebraska Congressman.

He is considered the promoter of the bimetallism, the unlimited coinage of silver supported by the owners of the mines in the U. S. west.

He opposed the "hard money" policy of rich people in the East. Eastern companies and men of money supported the gold standard, a monetary system that worked this way. A unit of currency is the equivalent of the value of the same quantity of gold.

He became famous for his July 9th, 1896 speech at the Democratic Convention in Chicago, Illinois. He invited to support the free coinage of silver.
