The Kingdom of Ghana, which lasted from 750 to 1068, was located in what is now southeastern Mauritania and the western part of Mali, south of the Sahara, in the middle valley of the Senegal River. It was known by the name of Wagadu by its own Soninke citizens, but the Europeans and Arabs called it the Ghanaian Empire for the title of its king, Ghana, which meant "warrior king". Wagadu meant land of flocks.
