Asia and Europe were connected by the Silk Road. The silk road was huge because it allowed Europe to get precious goods of bronze and silk back to Europe. With the discovery of gold in the Americas the Europeans finally had something to trading with the Asians. Before the discovery of gold, they weren't really interested in any European goods.
