As the result of the railway industry's fervent development in the 19th century, the danger of monopolies quickly became apparent. Reason why a group of organized farmers, who were known as the Grangers, pushed for the regulation of this industry in order to protect themselves from not only the unfair prices but also from the practices of such railway companies.

Some of the most important regulations and policies were adopted during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson, period when it was created the Federal Trade Commission in order to prevent the "unlawful suppression of competition". Among the regulations approved for such commission it is possible to highlight the Clayton Anti-Trust Act, which was passed to prohibit discrimination in prices among buyers, the Sherman Anti-Trust Ac, which was the first federal law directed against industrial combination and monopoly, the Robinson Patman Act, that gave the Federal Trade Commission the power to control the interstate commerce's prices, the Celler-Kefauver Act, that was enacted to prevent corporate merges which could promote monopolies. To name a few of the regulations promoted by the Federal Trade Commission.
