Not just the idea, but the fact that natural rights exist and that every man, being created equal are endowed by their creator has a right to said rights. This is self evident. Independence was declared because, ultimately, the governed were deprived of their natural rights. The monarchy and secluded ruling class were major reasons why tyranny persisted, hence the reason why George Washington adamantly refused to become a king, but it all boils down to weather or not the God given rights of the people are being protected by their government, or attacked.
