The Opium Wars forced China to expand ports for trade. Following the first Opium War, which ended in 1842, five new Chinese treaty ports at Guangzhou (Canton), Shanghai, Xiamen (Amoy), Ningbo, and Fuzhou, where British merchants and their families could reside were opened. A huge indemnity (compensation) was to be paid to the British government and merchants also follwoing the first War. F ollowing the second War (1856-1860) 11 more treaty ports were opened.

At the end of the second War the British and French captured Beijing.
