    Both colonies Jamestown and Plymouth were founded by British people. Both of the Colonies had a desire for self-government, this was explicit with the Mayflower Compact that was the first governing document of Plymouth Colony. In Jamestown, this was accomplished when Captain John Smith took control of the government.
