The Spanish intervention in the US War of Independence was the result of an alliance with France, and although both powers initially only sought to weaken Great Britain, the Spanish came to obtain territorial gains once the war ended. Spain retained Menorca and West Florida in the Treaty of Paris of 1783 and exchanged the Bahamas with Great Britain for East Florida. In addition, Spain settles its sovereignty over the coast of mosquitoes, Campeche and the San Andrés archipelago.
