Roger Williams established his own colony because of a dispute with church leaders in New England.

    Explanation:

Roger Williams was an English-born American Protestant theologian, one of the first advocates of religious freedom and secularism. In 1636 he founded a colony, the Providence Plantations, which then became the Colony of Rhode Island, where he provided asylum to representatives of religious minorities. The colony's constitution, designed by Williams, was democratic and gave members of all denominations full freedom of belief and conscience. Rhode Island already banned slavery in 1652.

In addition, Williams also studied the languages of the Indians and was one of the first abolitionists in North America.
