What did Thomas Paine's Common Sense increase support for in the colonies

    Thomas Paine published Common Sense in January 1776 in support of the Patriot cause. Using clear, plain language, Paine rallied the colonists to support the break from Britain. In arguing for American independence, Paine denounced the British monarchy and argued that people are born in to a state of equality.
