The Cold War was a tense standoff of world views between the United States and its allies vs. the Soviet Union and its allies. The USA saw democracy and capitalism as the best values. The USSR saw authoritarian rule and communism as the best way of life. The two sides never went to war against each other directly. But they competed over control in Europe - such as the Berlin blockade and Berlin airlift. The also supported opposing sides in conflicts like the Korean War. They also engaged in a massive nuclear arms race against one another.
