The main way in which things like automobiles, the radio, the movies, etc. created a common or shared experience in terms of what we read, hear, and see in America, is that almost all of these activities were communal, wide-spread, and involved the same content. For instance, the same movie that was made in Hollywood would have been seen my hundreds of thousands of people around the country.
