The Battle of Hampton Roads was the most important sea battle of the Civil War. The battle introduced to ironclad ships the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia (Merrimack). The battle occurred on March 8 to 9, 1862. The Virginia sank two enemy ships the USS Congress and the USS Cumberland while a third ship the Minnesota ran a ground. The next day it faced off with the USS Monitor. Both ships squared off against each other. Both ships’ artillery was not able to pierce the armor. Later both withdrew and each claimed victory others viewed it as a tie.
