Why was napoleon bonaparte's coup d'état of the french directory in 1799 successful?

    The Directory was not giving France the stability it needed. In addition, the coup was successful because he was able to trick the Directors into thinking that a Jacobin coup was about to take place, and by the time they had begun to resign from the Directory, it was all but apparent that the coup was being led not by the Jacobins, but by Bonaparte, who was put in charge of all the standing armies at the time.
