Why were the French interested in North America?

All I know on this subject is that The French had a single colony in North America, of which became known as Louisiana (after the French monarch King Louis XVI (the 16th)
However Britain then bought Louisiana off the French for £3,000,000 (three million Great British pounds) in order to extend their vast empire.
